Are You a Multipotentialite?

“You can steer yourself in any direction you choose.”

-Dr. Seuss

I  know what you’re thinking…“What the hell is a multipotentialite?” It’s the same question I asked when I first heard this word on Episode 220 of the Happen to Your Career Podcast.

I’m so glad I know the answer now because it’s a huge part of who I am–and why this blog exists.

A multipotentialite is “someone who has many interests and creative pursuits”. So, if you’re like me and find yourself trying to learn everything you can about new topics quite often (such as bullet journaling, yoga, and morning routines are high up on that list) you’re a multipotentialite!

This word came to be when writer, career coach, and blogger, Emilie Wapnick realized that having “too many interests” wasn’t something she should be ashamed of. Instead, it’s  something to embrace.

In Emilie’s TEDx Talk she explains that being a multipotentialite has many benefits, but three in particular stand out: the ability to connect seemingly unrelated topics, learn quickly, and adapt easily. I don’t know about you, but all of those seem like important and unique skills to me.

So, the next time you are interested in a topic and think to yourself “I shouldn’t be spending my time on this. It isn’t going to help me grow my career/life/business”, remind yourself that isn’t true. Being a multipotentialite can open doors that you never knew existed.

Don’t settle for being just one thing. Be everything you want to be.
